Should You Gain Weight?

Updated: Jul 11, 2021

One of the questions we’re asked most at Growing Horizons is: “Should I gain weight?” I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t choose to gain weight, and it’s important you understand those reasons. At the same time, there are many reasons why you might want to gain weight, the most important being that you think it’s what you need and want to do, whether that means adopting a lifestyle that indirectly leads to weight gain or intentionally gaining more weight as a feedee or gainer.

So what are the reasons why you should take the plunge and get fatter than you currently are? That’s the question we’re going to explore in order to help you decide whether gaining weight is something that you want to do.

You Don’t Want to Feel Constrained

If you feel as if you’re not eating as much as you would like and you want to change that, deliberately gaining weight might be the path for you. It’s easy to feel constrained when you’re trying to maintain your weight or even lose weight. But if you decide to throw all of those plans out the window and instead endeavour to gain weight, you won’t have to feel constrained in terms of what you choose to eat ever again. It can be truly freeing.

You Simply Enjoy Food

Even if you’ve not got a particularly big appetite, you might be motivated to gain weight simply because you have a love of food and you enjoy eating. There’s nothing particularly unusual about that. Indulging your love of food a little more than you’ve been doing recently might turn out to be more fulfilling for you. There’s plenty of wonderful food out there to try, so you shouldn’t feel any shame about wanting to enjoy it.

Overindulging is Enjoyable to You

Some people simply love the feeling of overindulging, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. If you want to live a lifestyle that allows you to overeat on a regular basis without having to feel guilty or judged for it, it makes sense to set off on a path of deliberately gaining weight. Again, it comes down to doing what you enjoy and having the confidence to take the path of your choosing.

Focus on What You Want and Not the Expectations of Others

This is an important point and one you should keep in mind when making any decisions about your body and your eating habits. At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is what makes you happy and what you truly want to do deep down inside. You shouldn’t feel pressured to take any path that you’re not comfortable with or to eat a certain way purely because of the expectations of others. Instead, do what you feel is right for you.

Your Partner is Accepting of It

It’s much easier to pursue the things you want in life if your partner is accepting or even encouraging of it. If they’re a feeder or are interested in helping you gain weight, maybe that’s made you want to try it out. If it doesn’t work for you and you don’t like it, you can always change your approach. But it’s easier to try these things out with the support of your partner.

Those are just some compelling reasons why you should proceed on your weight gain journey, but if you need some more, we recommend that you read Dr Feeder’s guide on ‘Deciding to get Fat’. It’s a great guide that includes a flowchart that will almost certainly help you to decide.
